Listen to your Doctor.

My optometrist is in Footscray.

That is a loooooong way for me, but I have been seeing him since I was 3 1/2 and I think he’s awesome.

He also figured out why I get headaches when I read, but I will spare you the details.

After I finished my eye exam, I asked him where it was good for pho, sure, it was 39 degrees, but I wanted me some pho.  He directed me to a place down the street next to a chemist.

It was packed at 2:30.  Usually when I get pho at 2:30 in the city, the places that I go to are pretty much empty.

I had to order the spicy beef soup, it’s in my blood to want to sweat out the heat.  This traditionally doesn’t come with the flat, rice noodles which are simply referred to as pho, but round, rice noodles which have an addictive bite to it.

For $8.50, I recieved a larger than usual bowl of noodles in the piquant, rich and spicy broth with lemongrass, pork loaf, pork blood, tripe, pork belly, sliced rare beef, beef tendon balls and a slice of peppercorn sausage.  The garnishes are lettuce, cabbage and bean sprouts, fresh chilies and lemon wedges.

Fucking bliss.

  2. That slick of chilli oil gives it all away. What is it about hot chilli soups that is so good even in the sweltering heat?

I love this place! Great noodles, and the cleanest toilets I’ve ever used in a pho joint. The Hue looks fab, but I’m not so keen on the blood jelly. If I move to Footscray, you’ll have to give me the name of your optometrist :)

Jess, I’ll spare you the dribble about how much in love I am with you and your work for now… but I’m curious as to where you tuck into decent pho in the big smoke? I’ve had mixed experiences, can’t quite nail it. Possibly the little place on Russell st is the closest I’ve come to “ok”. This place in Foots looks ace!
    Keep up the great show

    Nola- only when reading.

Lorraine- Hm, I think it has to be the fact that it is in our blood to sweat it out. I don’t know, at least that is what my parents told me.

Elegant Gourmand- hmm, as with the toilets, I saw an old woman peeing with the door open and then rinsing her mouth out in the sink and spitting in it.

Saraswati- Indeed, if only I had the commitment to come more often.

Larger Serving- you can’t. Unfortunately Pho Dzung (which is the place you’re talking about) is the only half-decent place in town. Go to Victoria st, unfortunately.

Vee- I know exactly what you mean. But innards. Yum.

Ms Baklover- Definitely worth the trip.
