Do you think they know?

This is a photo of the ‘Thank You’ book at Bamboo Room (which also sounds dirty).

I found this place when I went to the old Lost and Found location and saw that it had turned into an Asian supermarket (of the same name), run by the chef’s husband.  The chef is one woman, from Northern China, who cooks Northern Chinese dishes and simple Sezchuan as well.  She apparently has a huge thing with balance and harmony as she is a qualified natropath.

They, like the menu are unpretentious, honest and humble.  After a few drinks last week, after watching the last Heath Ledger film (don’t watch it).  Cider at the Grace Darling (Coldstream on tap, fuck yes) turned into fried dumplings at Bamboo Room (the name still makes me giggle).

A plate of mixed fried dumplings, $9. They give you a choice of beef, chicken and pork and we decided on all of them in a mix and they were happy to oblige.  Ten pieces per serve, which come with black vinegar with snipped coriander and chili oil.  The skins appear to be hand made and some of the best friend dumplings I have had.  Crisp, juicy and flavoursome, minus the MSG attack you would get anywhere else and had a bite to the filling which meant there was a balance of protein to the vegetables which didn’t make it mushy.  We were told there may be a wait with the dumplings, but their version of a wait was five minutes.

My fried seafood noodles, $10.50. The menu said it was served with rice noodles, but as you can see, they’re hokkien noodles.  They were also out of soup stocks that day, which only makes me want to try them because they are boiled down with the bones overnight to build flavour.  the noodles reminded me of of my childhood, with a thick, sweet and savoury gravy which is soy and oyster sauce based, poured into the wok nearing the end of cooking.  They were good, but a little disappointing after the promise of the dumplings.

However, they are open on a Sunday and are quick, do take aways and have a lot of vegetarian dishes as well.

I’ll tell you how their soups go another day…

Sorry you were disapointed by the noodles, but all of the fried noodles on our menu are “Fried Egg” noodles.
