Um, I’m not trippin’

A sign of cheap, vegan heaven...

A sign of cheap, vegan heaven...

We have all eaten these, from here, at some stage of our cheapo adventuring between the old and new Lost and Found store on Smith St.

Or, perhaps you’re trying to eat out with your ever frustrating person-friend who becomes more and more frustrating by becoming vegan… who isn’t doing it for any political or ethical reasons, but just to be more of a trendy hipster.

Well, this is how I discovered this place, and I have to admit, back then I kinda really liked it.

Yes, my friend was impatient with me and wouldn’t let me take photos…but, I kind of liked it.

No, I really liked it.

There was something substantial, generous, and even tasty about eating these doughey, beany, heavy, starchy, soy-cheese laden wraps of future afternoon naps.

Not today.

Today, I unfortunately discovered that Woodspoon is no longer open for lunch…ever.

So, I walked further down and got myself a burrito with my housemate.

With the ever returning and disappearing sun, we decide to sit outside and avoid the kitsch, dark and crammed inside.  I mean, I like it, but it is crowded: it is what a real estate agent would call homely.

Don’t get me wrong, for a place that does burritos, quesadillas, nachos and tacos for vegans and vegetarians in a tiny space, the service is quick and hell, they’re polite.

You see what I mean?

You see what I mean?

So, with speedy arrival (fake fruits on sticks are given to you instead of numbers…we got a banana)…

we see that nothing is suspect.  Everything is the same, it’s in its own house…the House Burrito, $8.50, 50c extra for soy cheese.

We would like to welcome you to Foil City.  Really, it’s a nice place for convenient eating and salsa-pee retention.  Well, that is a lie, my lunch still peed on my hands.

And its guts.  The soft burrito, is as usual…great.  The ingredients…fresh.  The hot sauce, still zingy and occasionally waving hello to you.  However, it disappears after a few bites now.

And unfortunately, despite the beans being very well cooked, this was very bland.  The flavour was pretty much from the cheese and the salsa had nothing to it.  And trust me, I was so hungry anything would have been tasty, and hell, I no longer smoke so it isn’t my tastebuds.

Hopefully it’s an off day, but I hope that Trippy Taco isn’t succumbing to shitness from mainstream popularity.

What what what? No Woodspoon lunch, and the Trippytaco’s getting bland? This is disappointing. And a reminder that I am not visiting Fitzroy often enough.

My one bit of Fitzroy food news: when Charcoal Lane say they do weekend breakfast from 8am, they actually mean 9am. Boo.

Try the tofu burrito with sour cream. Very addictive! (And that’s from a meat and dairy lover)

Yep, double whammy for us Collingwood lunching boys. Trippy Taco frustrated us with their complete lack of consistency in every sense, sometimes the beans were mushy, sometimes perfect, the ratios of fillings were always different and their serving sizes constantly changed. We craved McDonaldsesque reliability with a great tasting simple product, not Hippy Tacos. Woodspoon became the next default lunching place but alas it’s been a victim of it’s own success, despite myself and others pleading to Mike (half of the husband and wife OZ/JAP partnership) to keep serving lunch they decided the pressure was too great and good staff to difficult to come by to open for two services. Then, to top things off, the Yasai soup was removed from the dinner menu. We should have kept it on the lowdown. ;)
